When Hawthorne wrote The Scarlet Letter the Puritans were a major influential group in American. The Puritans were very intolerant to other groups, people and religions. Hawthorne uses the Puritans as symbols for society. Hester breaks away from the Puritan rules and society and lives by her own morals. Hawthorne shows the importance of living by your own rules and not living within the confines of society. Living by your own rules is a tTranscendentalist idea. The Transcendentalist movement was about turning toward nature and being your own person. Hawthorne was at one time a Transcendentalist and this was very prominent throughout the entire novel. The story also uses the town as a mask covering who we really are inside. Only in nature, represented by the woods, can we truly express ourselves and we really are inside. This novel talked about the major issues of the time period. Its' success can be attributed to the discussion of these issues in an American way that people could relate. This book showed that perfection could not be obtained like the Puritans believed and it shows that even the most holy commit sin.
